XI GAMMA CHAPTER OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC.
Chapter History
The Xi Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. was chartered on March 17, 1979. It was chartered on the Southeast Missouri State campus in Cape Girardeau, MO. With the assistance of its mother chapter Beta Eta (Carbondale, Illinois), Xi Gamma was the first black Greek lettered organization on the Southeast Campus. Eight men were responsible for the chartering of this chapter. These men were deemed Pharaohs by the fraternity.
There names are:
Brother James Brightman, Brother Bruce Bryant, Brother Alex J. Clinton, Brother Steven Q. Edwards, Brother Oliver Gills,
Brother Emerson Jones, Brother Willie Taylor, and Brother Joseph G. Williams.
These men continued to show the way on campus by leadership, scholarship, service and brotherhood.
In October 2004, the chapter was honored over the homecoming festivities. Xi Gamma celebrated their 25th Anniversary. With the help of Brother Terry Allen, representatives from the past 25 lines of Xi Gamma returned to celebrate and to commemorate the success of the Xi Gamma chapter.
The Xi Gamma chapter has been going strong for now 33 years. It prides itself in local programs such as the Martin Luther King Peace Walk, Boy and Girls Club Volunteer Service. Also the chapter has been responsible for holding continuing the tradition of the Miss. Black and Gold Pageant every fall and the end of the year Final Fling festivities.
With over 150 initiates, the Xi Gamma chapter has continued to be a presence on the campus of Southeast Missouri State. With great accomplishments such as the first African-American Student Government president, first and second African American Men of the Year, and several other attributes, the chapter has laid the foundation for nothing but continued success.
